What do US Senators do?
How do they affect me?
The U.S. Senate is the sister to the U.S. House of Representatives. It has some unique responsibilities, including approving treaties, and approving Presidential Cabinet members, Supreme Court Justices, federal judges and ambassadors to other countries. A President may appoint a Supreme Court Justice, for example, but that person has to be confirmed by a Senate vote.
The Senate is called the upper house of the Legislative Branch and is presided over by the Vice President, unlike the House of Representatives which is presided over by an elected Speaker of the House chosen from among Representatives.
