What do Justices of the Peace do?
How do they affect me?
A Justice of the Peace Court only deals with criminal misdemeanors (Class C) punishable by fine only, like if you go for dinner and skip out on paying your bill. We also call this small claims court, and the Justice of the Peace oversees the justice/small claims court for any offenses under $10,000.
You may have to visit the Justice of the Peace if you're facing eviction or have had liens placed on your personal property, or if you're a student having issues attending school. You may also visit the Justice of the Peace if you'd like to get married, but you'd need to find another court if you needed a divorce.
Justices of the Peace are elected for 4-year terms.
