What do Tax Assessor-Collectors do?
How do they affect me?
The Tax Assessor-Collector collects taxes on behalf of the county and state. This includes property taxes, which fund things like the local school district and public services.
However, the Tax Assessor-Collector does NOT decide the tax rates. Tax rates are set by the County Commissioners. The County Tax Assessor-Collector is just responsible for collecting and distributing the taxes.
The current Tax rate in Marshall, Texas in 2019 is .54 for every $100, so if your home is appraised at $100,000 you'll pay approximately $540 each year in property taxes. These funds go to support schools, local hospitals, county roads, the fire department, and other public works.
In Harrison County, the County Tax Assessor-Collector also collects vehicle registration fees and managing titles. So, you visit the local Tax Assessor-Collector every year when you renew your registration for a car, motorcycle or boat.
Tax Assessor-Collectors are elected every 4 years.
